Scenario Planning I: the approach

How do I take advantage of the opportunities and dodge the pitfalls? Is this plan/ policy/ strategy too risky? How do we prepare for the future? In a rapidly evolving and complex world these are important questions. Scenario planning is a technique used to understand and prepare for an uncertain future. Applied by both stakeholders and management from large corporations down to governments and communities, the goal is to make better decisions.

This module will introduce you to the practice of scenario planning. It will give you the tools to understand how the future can evolve and how to reach a desired future.

By the end of this module you will have gained competency in:

  • Understanding scenario planning approaches.
  • Using scenarios in business, policy and strategy environments.
  • Tailoring a scenario planning approach.
  • Making future-proofed decisions with scenarios.

Module content:

The techniques of scenario planning, future scenarios vs. the desired future, scenarios vs. forecasts, creating scenarios as stories of the future, stakeholder participation and implementation, scenario planning for strategy, scenario planning for business, making robust future-proofed decisions using scenarios.
